Using Your Gift To Serve Others
100 Black Dads is a photo project that highlights the loving, hard working, and nurturing side of black fathers in America.
100 Black Dads came about through my involvement in learning about the Black Lives Matter movement, and my desire to contribute to this movement through my art. I want to use photography to explore what it means to be black while raising children in today’s culture.
For me personally, I hope to use this an opportunity to listen and learn from each of the volunteers. In order to participate, each father has to complete a questionnaire about what it means for them to be a black father raising children in today’s culture.
I’m trying really hard to use this time to listen. I want to make sure to keep myself out of the way and just let each dad’s unique story unfold in front of my camera organically. Once the project is complete, I hope that it will find a broader audience for exposure about this important perspective.
I also hope to find a means of distribution for this project so that all families can learn from it, and so that black families in particular can relate to and take pride in it.
